Finding More-mentum

Updated: Dec 14, 2021

We've all heard the saying 'where your focus goes, your momentum will flow'. Tony Robbins says that "to get what you really want in life, you need a clear goal that has purpose and meaning behind it. Once this is in place, you can focus your energy on the goal and become obsessive about it". The same goes for creating momentum. When you learn how to focus your energy and move intentionally, your ability to sustain results and create success becomes unconcious.

This is definitely easier said than done but the secret to finding momentum is through daily action; aligned with your goals. Simply shifting your attitude and focusing on the positive can create momentum. You can imagine if you focus on negative things such as getting a parking ticket, you'll finish your catch up to come back to the car and find none other than a parking ticket on your car. In that headspace you will draw more negativity because thats what you're concentrating on. Shifting this and having an abundance mindset, you will have the opposite effect. Focus on positive outcomes and success rather than the what if's. Focus on gratitude and you'll find more things to be grateful for.

Momentum begets momentum, and the best way to start is just to start. That goal that you wrote down to start in the New Year, start it now. Ofcourse a goal like a New Years resolution should obviously begin in the New Year but imagine if you spent the next 6 weeks doubling down on that goal and aligning your actions with the outcome now, how far you'd be in January. Success comes from taking the initiative, being determined and committing to your goal rather that prolonging your efforts. The actions you start now could produce the very momentum that will help you achieve your goal, you just have to focus.

How can you better focus your energy though? There's no one method but a combination of the following activities will bring you that much closer to your goal and help get you in the right mental state to create a breakthrough;

Meditation

Research shows that meditating can change the structure and function of the brain through relaxation, which can reduce stress, improve attention span, increase focus and learning concentration. Meditation is essential to energy and focus as it allows you to quiet your mind and take control of your thoughts. Take 10 minutes each morning to really clear your mind and better focus on the outcomes of each day.

Music

Evidence suggests that music can engage your brain in such a way that it trains it to pay better attention to events and make predictions about what might happen. You may not become a fortune teller but accepting that we're hardwired to enjoy music and playing in the background can allow us to focus and lead our focus to more impressive insights.

Exercise

It may not be the most obvious thing but getting your heart pumping and feeling the flow of adrenaline in your system from exercise is proven to be an affective way to focus your energy. Physical activity immediately boosts the brain's dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin levels — all of which affect focus and attention.

The Pomodoro Technique

Of the other activities, this is the one that will directly test your focus. If constantly becoming distracted or procrastinate then you need to start practising concentrating for slightly longer periods. The Pomodororo technique involves setting a timer for 15 minutes and focusing entirely on the work at hand for that duration. Once the timer beeps, you may set it again for five minutes as your break time. After a 5 minute smart break, its back to focusing for another 15 minutes on your work.

Each day you can add a small amount of time to how long you focus until you increase your ability to focus your energy into completing a task.

Momentum in monumental. When you’re in great form and have great momentum - you’re in your top tier. Momentum is hard to gain! It takes a lot of intentional work and effort to get there. Rhythm of daily action aligned with your goals creates the momentum. What simple action could you take today to produce a new momentum toward success in your life?
